Davis Tech partners with Red Barn Academy

Davis Technical College has partnered with Red Barn Academy to bring Davis Tech’s Welding Technology and Culinary Arts programs to Red Barn Academy residents.

Red Barn Academy is a residential life-skills program in a farm setting. Men who have experienced drug addiction, criminality and homelessness live at the Academy for two years while learning valuable life skills and behavior modification.

Red Barn Academy Program Director Alan Fahringer believes in the importance of gaining these skills because he was once a resident at a therapeutic community like Red Barn Academy.

“The impact of obtaining the skills inherent in the culinary and welding classes cannot be overstated,” said Fahringer. “It could literally mean the difference between a viable career path versus a bottom rung job that fails to provide a livable wage, especially for our population of men.”

Nicholas Anderson completed the first Culinary Arts program offered at Red Barn Academy. He knew that learning such this life skill was important, but the course offered him more than cooking skills.

“I learned how to sear a fish, cook a steak to perfection, but I also got to know how much people on the outside in the community care about guys like me, and how they want us to be successful. It’s a different perspective and it gives me hope that these opportunities are provided for us.”

The Davis Tech Foundation, along with donations from Petersen Inc. and Lincoln Electric provided funding and equipment for the programs. Head to foundation.davistech.edu/ for more information
