Ability to Benefit Policy Student Financial Aid - Policy and Procedures

    1. The College has established guidelines for determining a student’s ability to benefit from the use of federal funding as required by the Department of Education.

  3. Policy
    1. Students enrolling in a post-secondary education program for the first-time after July 1, 2012, must possess one of the following:
      1. Has a high school diploma (this can be from a foreign school if it is equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma)
      2. Has the recognized equivalent of a high school diploma, such as a general educational development (GED) certificate or other state sanctioned test or diploma-equivalency certificate
      3. Has completed homeschooling at the secondary level as defined by state law
      4. Has completed secondary in a home-school setting, which qualifies for an exemption from compulsory attendance requirements under state law; if state law does not require a home-schooled student to receive a credential for their education
      5. Has completed one of the ability-to-benefit (ATB) alternatives and is either currently enrolled in an eligible career pathway program or first enrolled in an eligible post-secondary program prior to July 1, 2012
      6. All students with enrollment prior to July 1, 2012, must have a high school diploma, a GED or equivalent nationally recognized completion; to receive federal financial aid while attending Davis Technical College. Or satisfactorily completed six credit or 225 clock hours toward a degree or certificate at a Title IV eligible school or be self-certified as home-schooled
    2. Procedure
      1. Effective July 1, 2012, all students submitting applications for Federal Financial Aid will be asked to provide documentation of their high school completion status or equivalent, to the Financial Aid Office. Students enrolling in a post-secondary education program for the first-time on or after July 1, 2012, must provide evidence of high school graduation from a valid accredited high school, associate degree or equivalent (60 credits minimum), GED, Military DD214, or Revision Date: May 17, 2022 meet the homeschooling requirements as described in section 3.1 of this policy.
        1. For the purposes of validating high school completion through homeschooling, the student will provide a self-attestation of their home schooling completion.
        2. Students enrolled in a Title IV eligible post-secondary program prior to July 1, 2012, can demonstrate Ability to Benefit by providing proof of high school graduation, GED, college transcripts, or meet the homeschooling requirements as described in section 3.1 of this policy.
